Minor Elementary School, Gwinnett County
Better Air School
By partnering with The Clean Air Campaign and becoming a Better
Air School, Minor Elementary reduced traffic congestion at
the school, increased students levels of physical activity,
and improved air quality at the school and in the community.
Exploring
Your Community, Litter, and Recycled Paper
In this model EIC unit, students will recall the characteristics
of their neighborhood as they create a map that shows where
they live, observe if litter has impacted their neighborhood
through a walking tour, and recycle paper trash into homemade
paper.

Minor 2nd grade gifted education students observe birds in
the wetlands as they participate in a unit titled Be
a Naturalist. Students appreciate the platform donated
by Richport Properties. This platform enables the students
to see deeper into the wetland area. It will provide them
with many opportunities to learn about the wetland habitat
and the wildlife that lives there.
Announcing Our New 5-Acre Outdoor Classroom!
Students Aaron Chu (front left) and Hernan Gutierrez
(front right) use a water quality monitoring system donated
by Richport Properties as teacher Amy Keeton and Richport
development director Lee Williams watch.
This spring (May 2004), through our Partner-in-Education
relationship with Richport Properties, Minor received access
to a new outdoor classroom designed for student water quality
monitoring. The five-plus acres, part of an infill neighborhood
Richport is developing next to the school, were donated to
the Gwinnett Open Land Trust.
Lee Williams, director of development for Richport Properties,
explains Water quality monitoring systems installed
before development began will stay in place so Rebecca Minor
students can take water samples for analysis and data collecting
to learn how rainfall and storms impact our natural resources
prior to, during and after land development." This will
provide a unique, hands-on opportunity for students to learn
about the effects of storm water runoff and how neighboring
homeowners can care for the environment. A platform to be
installed this summer will take the program one step further
to let the children observe and study the land's wetland wildlife.
Richport Properties has donated a total of 75.5 acres in
conservation easements to the Gwinnett Open Land Trust. Richport
also received the Howard Allen Business and Industry Award
presented by Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful, a nonprofit,
volunteer organization dedicated to the environment.
