The Burton 4-H Center on Tybee Island, formerly known as the Tybee Island 4-H Center, is operated by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. There are five 4-H facilities throughout the state promoting education of GA natural resources. The Burton Island 4-H Center on Tybee Island is the smallest of the 4-H facilities but serves approximately 6,000 students every year.
The camp is 62 years old and 2008 begins our 21st year of Environmental Education. The camp used to be a frogman training center. After WWII it was donated to the city of Tybee Island who then offered it to the Cooperative Extension Service as a facility for serving Georgia youth.
The Burton 4-H Center offers Environmental Education programs throughout the school year. Currently, our most popular program is a 3 day-2 night field study that includes 7 classes and 7 meals. If a long trip is not feasible, various day programs are offered.
All our programs meet Georgia's Performance Standards, so each day here is considered a day in school and no classroom time is lost.
