Environmental Education in Georgia

Sandy Creek Nature Center

The Sandy Creek Nature Center serves the community as a wildlife sanctuary and environmental education facility. The Environmental Natural Science and Appropriate Technology (ENSAT) Center's interactive learning exhibits highlight the interdependence of the natural and human communities.

The wetland community exhibit, including two large, fresh water ponds and a beaver dam, gives children an up close experience with Georgia's native turtles, fish, frogs, lizards and other creatures. The exhibit also offers an interactive look at the wetlands. Visitors can use microscopes to study specimens, crawl into a beaver lodge to look through a "port hole" at underwater life, and use an interactive auditory panel to discover aquatic nightlife.

The coastal community exhibit houses a 2,000-gallon marine aquarium and three smaller tanks containing marine life, including diamondback terrapins. This exhibit also tracks the life cycle of the sea turtle, one of the earth's rarest reptiles, and shows the important role it plays in the food chain of coastal ecosystems. Visitors can watch live turtles and learn about their feeding and care.

If you decide to spend some time in the great outdoors, Sandy Creek has more than four miles of trails, which provide access to a variety of habitats typical to the Georgia Piedmont, including river floodplain, marshland, upland pine and hardwood forests, fields, ponds and streams.
