
This lush, interior barrier island located near historic Savannah encompasses 533 acres of salt marsh, freshwater wetlands, and mixed pine and hardwood forest. The park provides a true educational experience of tidal estuarian eco-systems.
The site includes five miles of trails, boardwalks and observation towers, with educational markers pointing out natural, archaeological and historical highlights. The park also features salt flats, forested hammocks, Civil War earthwork fortifications, Indian middons, observation towers, a Giant Ground Sloth skeleton replica, picnic areas, camp sites, a group shelter and interpretive museum. Skidaway Island is one of 18 sites on the Coastal Birding Trail and is home to numerous bird species, including migrating Painted Buntings.
