Troops stood guard on Tybee through the Spanish American War of 1898, World War I and World War II. In 1947, the Fort was closed and sold to the Town of Tybee and tourism returned as a major part of Tybee's history. By the 1950s many of the forts buildings had been converted for use by private owners. In 1961, Battery Garland, the former gun battery and magazine for a 12 inch long-range gun, became the Tybee Island museum.
Rooms that once stored six hundred pound projectiles and two hundred pound bags of gun powder, now hold the collections and exhibits of more than four hundred years of Tybee Island history. Today, visitors marvel at the private residences nestled atop the fort's walls, the magnificent ocean and river views –- and the fort that played a role in so many phases of American history.

Inman Park Aboretum
Located two miles east of downtown, Historic Inman Park is Atlanta’s first planned community and one of the nation’s first garden suburbs. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

An arboretum is simply a living tree museum. The typical arboretum is located in a park or garden, where trees can be arranged in themes or by closely related species. But this isn’t a typical arboretum. For one thing, the trees in this arboretum are the trees of Inman Park — shade and ornamental, old and young, exotic and native. For another, people live here. This is their arboretum, which these neighbors helped design and continue to maintain.
Oakhurst Aboretum
An arboretum is a living tree museum, where collections are often arranged by theme or closely related species. But this isn’t like any other arboretum. For one thing, people live in it and it belongs to the community. Neighbors helped plan and design the arboretum as well as plant and care for the trees. Trees are as much a part of the neighborhood as Oakhurst Elementary, the historic Scottish Rite property, the Oakhurst Village, and the homes that line the streets.

King Springs Elementary School
King Springs Elementary School opened in 1957. At that time there were 325 students enrolled in grades one through eight. There were 10 classroom teachers. Many changes have occurred in our community since then. Gone are the pastures and main roads with just two lanes. Today the City of Smyrna has undergone a bit of a renaissance and the "Jonquil City", located just 10 miles northwest of Atlanta, has become one of the most sought after locations in Georgia.

Currently King Springs, with just grades K-5, serves almost twice the number of children than when it opened. Our building has also undergone many additions over the years as we grew to meet the needs of our students in the 21st century.

The school currently has six hundred twenty-five students with twenty-seven regular education and six special education teachers; one self-contained Emotional Behavior Disorders classroom and one self-contained Learning Disabilities classroom. We have a full-time guidance counselor, an Area Lead Teacher, Early Intervention teachers, a full-time Resource teacher, an English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher, a Target (gifted) teacher, a speech specialist, and full-time art, P.E. and music specialists.

Since many of our students come from single-parent homes, or homes where little English is spoken, parent involvement in school activities is very limited. However, we have a group of teachers committed to environmental education. For the past three years, we have celebrated Earth Week with a Humani Tree made up of students' "beleaves" on how they can help the environment and a Trash to Treasure contest. This year we have a GREEN TEAM that heads up our school-wide recycling effort. The team is made up of 5th graders who collect the recycle boxes from classrooms and offices every week and dump the paper, catalogues, junk mail, etc. into large bins in our parking lots.

Elba Island Liquified Natural Gas Terminal
Liquefied natural gas, commonly called LNG, is natural gas that has been cooled to -260 degrees Fahrenheit (-162 degrees Celsius), reducing it to a liquid state. In a liquid state, natural gas occupies about 1/600th of its original space. That means one LNG tanker can transport as much natural gas as 600 tankers carrying regular natural gas.

At a receiving facility, LNG is transferred into specially designed storage tanks where it is stored as a liquid. The LNG remains in storage until it is scheduled for redelivery. Then it’s pumped from the tanks and subjected to both heat and pressure, which returns it to a gaseous state for pipeline transportation.
