Environmental Education in Georgia

Arrowhead Environmental Education Center

Arrowhead is located at the Region 1 Headquarters of the Department of Natural Resources. The 337 acre Wildlife Management Area was originally a farming community which was later developed into a privately owned fish hatchery. Bought by the state in 1968, the hatchery was operated until 1979. Today the 14 hatchery ponds and three fishing lakes are currently used to aid in the management of water-fowl and wildlife.

The site offers a 2.2 mile interpretive nature trail which focuses on natural history and native wildlife of the area including a wetland and four beaver lodges. Although fishing is not available to the public, visiting students on field trips may fish and take home their catch. The Center began its operation in 1994. It is only open to sponsoring school systems which currently include Floyd County and Darlington Schools.
