In Georgia, smog season runs from May 1 through September 30. As part of their commitment to education, The Clean Air Campaign has five exciting air quality curriculum units for grades 4 to 8. Each grade level unit includes two to three lesson plans, along with a Teacher Resource Manual and support materials, that educate students about air chemistry, health and human behaviors well as the air pollution challenges facing Georgia.
The lesson plans were created by The Clean Air Campaign and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, involving a collaboration of educators, environmentalists and health experts to ensure that they are scientifically accurate as well as practical for classroom application and highly engaging to students. For example, students will be:
>huffing and puffing in experiments to prove that air has mass and exerts pressure.
>creating and solving traffic jams in a game to demonstrate the collective effect of individual behaviors and explore greener vehicle technologies.
>building working soda bottle models of their lungs to explore human anatomy and test how air pollution reduces lung capacity, and
>creating particle pollution and ozone-monitoring kits to prove for themselves that air quality changes from place to place and depends on the weather.
The lessons cross several subjects including science, social studies, geography and language arts, offering students comprehensive and integrated insight into the topic areas. All lesson plans meet Georgia Quality Core Curriculum (QCC) Standards and Georgia Performance Standards (GPS). All lessons have been approved by and are also available at
EEinGeorgia and
Georgia Learning Connections.
